Teaching and research do not represent a dichotomy for me and in fact have an important productive relationship. One consequence of this philosophy is that I am committed to having motivated undergraduates integrated into lab research projects. I believe that all students should be trained as scholars, whether they ultimately choose to become one or not. Graduate students and post-docs in my lab are expected to learn to mentor students as critical thinkers and future scientists. Teaching in lecture and lab offers the chance for me to revisit why science is endlessly fascinating and to transfer that enthusiasm to the next generation of scientists. The creativity that underlies a good lecture also provides the framework to design an excellent set of experiments and in both cases emphasizes the importance of hypothesis driven thinking and empirical evidence.
