Our research focuses on the extended phytochrome superfamily, bilin-based light sensors widespread in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Light-switches whose function depends on color and intensity of light, phytochromes and cyanobacteriochromes regulate photosynthesis-associated gene expression to optimize light energy conversion and to regulate growth, movement and reproduction to avoid suboptimal light conditions. We investigate representative species from all lineages of oxygenic photosynthetic organisms, including cyanobacteria, green alga and plants. Ongoing research seeks to leverage basic knowledge gained for optimizing yield and agronomic performance of photosynthetic species used for food, fiber and energy production.
