Kaplan Lab Junior Specialist

The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Davis invites applications for one Junior Specialist in molecular, cell and developmental biology. 

Position Description:

Research (95%): This position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions regarding disease progression at the cellular level, specifically focused on the intersection between cell stress, genome instability in such diseases as cancer and neurodegenerative disease. The candidate will create novel yeast strains and mammalian cell lines expressing protein tags to monitor autophagy and chromosome stability, including membrane trafficking, protein and organelle turnover and repetitive DNA elements. A working knowledge of how to quantify fluorescence signals and basic cellular physiology is required. The position also requires maintaining lab stocks, organizing and storing yeast strains as well as general lab upkeep. Finally, the candidate will summarize data, prepare figures, and assist writing manuscripts for publication and grant proposals, as well as presenting their research in regular group meetings. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills; as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.

University and Public Service (5%): The Junior Specialist will participate in training activities, such as mentoring undergraduate students. They will actively contribute to lab activities via meetings and unit/campus presentations. 

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Bachelor’s degree in cell or molecular biology with coursework in human disease biology, chromosome dynamics as well as cellular signaling pathways.

Experience in using molecular genetic techniques to create gene deletions and protein fusions in yeast chromosomes as well as genetic manipulation of cultured mammalian cell lines. The candidate must have experience with live-cell microscopy, using fluorescence imaging to analyze protein localization and levels. Maintaining a complete and detailed laboratory notebook of experimental procedures and data and to archive, label and document graphic and tabular data for publication, proposals, and/or presentations. 

Preferred qualifications

Prior experiences in lab management and mentoring trainees are a plus.

Salary Range:

Junior Specialist: A reasonable estimate for this position is $49,000 at Step 1 (@ 100%) or $52,200 at Step 2 (@ 100%)

Junior Specialist NEX: A reasonable estimate for this position is $23.47/hr at Step 1 or $25.00/hr

Short term, maximum two-year appointment based on the needs of the research project. Appointments may be made up to 100%.
